Symphytum Officinale Callus Culture Extract
A plant cell-culture extract derived from callus tissue of comfrey (Symphytum officinale). In cosmetics it is used as a skin-conditioning and soothing ingredient, and is generally positioned as a safer alternative to whole comfrey extracts because callus cultures are intended to reduce unwanted plant constituents such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Available data are limited compared with mainstream cosmetic botanicals.

Evidence is limited, so overall safety confidence is lower than for more widely studied botanicals. Although callus-culture ingredients are generally processed to avoid the pyrrolizidine alkaloids associated with comfrey, trace contamination or supplier variability cannot be ruled out.
