An anionic surfactant and co-emulsifier made from the sodium salts of mixed cetyl and stearyl sulfate esters. In cosmetics it is used to help cleanse, foam, and stabilize oil-in-water emulsions. It is generally a formulation aid rather than a skin-care active, and is most often found in rinse-off products or low-level emulsifying systems.

Interactions

incompatible with: strong anionic surfactant systems, high levels of other sulfates/sulfated surfactants, already-irritating actives in low-pH or rinse-off systems, barrier-impaired or over-exfoliated skin formulations

Risks & Warnings

Can be irritating or drying at higher use levels, especially in sensitive or compromised skin. As with other sulfate surfactants, it may contribute to stinging, tightness, or barrier disruption in leave-on or rinse-off products if the overall surfactant system is harsh. Not considered a common allergen, but individual sensitivity is possible.
