Moderate concern

Alpha-Terpinene is a volatile monocyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon used mainly as a fragrance component and naturally occurring terpene in essential oils. It is chemically unsaturated and prone to air oxidation, which can generate sensitizing oxidation products. In cosmetics it is generally present only at low levels as part of fragrance mixtures rather than as a primary active ingredient.

Risks & Warnings

Can be a skin sensitizer and irritant, especially after oxidation on air exposure. Fragrance allergen labeling may be required in the EU. Higher concentrations may increase irritation risk, particularly for sensitive skin. Because it is a volatile hydrocarbon, it is also flammable and should be handled with appropriate precautions in manufacturing.
